Achei lamentável que o Johnny Cash tivesse gravado esta música numa altura em que a voz já lhe faltava. Pensei que era um erro não ter sabido parar, reconhecer que era uma sombra do talento de outros anos. Pensei, e pensei mal. The Mercy Seat parece-me agora feito propositadamente para a voz dele. Esta voz, a da velhice, resignada, não a desafiante da juventude de Nick Cave.

"But I'm afraid I told a lie" — o último verso —, na versão de Nick Cave parece referir-se à afirmação original de inocência. Na de Johnny Cash remete para o repetido "And I'm not afraid to die".
